National Day

Democracy Day marks the day the military handed over power to an elected civilian government in 1999, marking the beginning of the longest continuous civilian rule since Nigeria's independence from colonial rule in 1960.

It is a tradition that has been held annually, beginning in the year 2000.

The International Day of Democracy provides an opportunity to review the state of democracy in the world.

Democracy is a process and a goal of a better Nigeria, and only with the full participation and support of you and I ( Citizens) can the goal of democracy be made into a reality to be enjoyed by everyone, everywhere.

So let's all join hands to provide a natural environment for the protection and effective realization of human rights.

Remember, the values of freedom, respect for human rights, and the principle of holding periodic and genuine elections by universal suffrage are essential elements of democracy...
